Name Monetizer Special Edition 2/10/08 WhyPark Troubles Special Edition - Google cancels AdSense Ads on WhyPark domains This is one of those rare special editions of the newsletter sent to alertyou of breaking news in the domain monetization field. Google AdSense ads began going blank on WhyPark domains sometime last weekend. Not all sites are affected, but it appears that a majority of sites are. WhyPark issued the following statement to members: As many of you havenoticed, AdSense ads started appearing as blank spaces last weekend forsome sites. Many sites have not been affected and continue to showAdSense without issue. Google’s response is that they have started tostop serving ads on selected sites where content is largely the same as other sites in their AdSense network. This is not just an issue that has affected WhyPark, but also other networks and individual sites. We haven’t been able to determine what makes them pick one site overanother. WhyPark came into being as a site designed to create a content-rich alternativeto domain parking. As such it uses public domain articles that areposted to multiple sites. This is, by definition, duplicate content . In the past Google has generally ranked sites lower if they have duplicate content. This is the first time they have blanked thousands-and-thousands of AdSense ads for this reason. In all fairness, WhyPark is not alone in being targeted. It's just that they are a big target. You can think of WhyPark as one big "duplicate content network." How bad can this get? Some people have received emails from Google disabling their AdSense accounts. It's not clear whether this is apermanent ban or not, but it's often hard to reach a human at Google toresolve issues like this. Here is the text that some people report receiving in an email: While going through our records recently, we found that your AdSense account has posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers. Since keeping your account in our publisher network may financially damage our advertisers in thefuture, we've decided to disable your account. Please understand that we consider this a necessary step to protect theinterests of both our advertisers and our other AdSense publishers. Werealize the inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you inadvance for your understanding and cooperation. This, unfortunately, may be a sign of things to come. Google seems to be saying that people who surf sites with duplicate content are less likely to follow-through and buy afterthey have clicked on an ad. Is there really data to support this? Ifso Google is not sharing it. Are you old enough to remember when the telephone company was a monopoly? (In some countries it still is.) You may remember a famous Lilly Tomlin skit where she played an arrogant telephone operator in a television commercial. The slogan of the "commercial" was "We're the Phone Company. We don't care. We don't have to." As Google becomes more like a monopoly will we begin to see that company take on a similar attitude? What should you do if you have domains at WhyPark? You do have some alternatives if you have domains with WhyPark. Consider making these changes as soon as possible, before you get a nasty email from Google. * In the short run you should explore WhyPark's alternative ad networks. Yahoo Publisher Network ads, for example, still work on WhyPark. * In the long run you should also add original content to domains at WhyPark using their customization tools. You may also want to move domains away from WhyPark and back to one of ourrecommended parking companies. The following are our currently recommended parking companies. * Parked Pays 7 days after you earn - twice a month * Sedo and Sedo Pro - one-click ads available for all domains * Active Audience and GoldKey - provide very good Yahoo-based income * TrafficZ great landing pages, changes afoot in February I will send this newsletter out monthly or when there have been significant changes in the domain name monetization industry. An extra issue may be sent when there is a major change in a service that warrants your immediate attention. Back issues are available at NameMonetizer.com.
