Royal ties knot with magazine deal

Monday, May 19, 2008

The eldest grandson of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has married his Canadian fiancee in a private ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly wed at the castle's 15th-century St George's Chapel in front of 300 guests including the queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the groom's mother, Princess Anne. Prince Harry, third in line to the throne, and his girlfriend Chelsy Davy were also there.

The bride wore a traditional white dress by Sassi Holford and a tiara loaned to her by her mother-in-law.

She was led into the chapel by her father Brian. Her bridesmaids included the groom's sister Zara Phillips. After the ceremony, the couple left in a horse-drawn carriage for their reception.

Phillips - the 11th in line to the throne - met Kelly in 2003, when both were working at the Montreal Grand Prix. Phillips did not immediately reveal he was a royal - Kelly later said she made the discovery when she spotted her husband-to-be in a program about Prince William.

The couple, both 30, live in London. Phillips looks after the Royal Bank of Scotland's motor racing sponsorship while Kelly is personal assistant to broadcaster Michael Parkinson.

They announced their engagement last year. Phillips stood to lose his right to become king because his bride-to- be was a Roman Catholic. British succession laws dating from 1701 bar anyone who marries a Catholic from becoming the monarch.

But Kelly recently converted to the Church of England allowing the groom to retain his position in the line of succession.

Phillips is among the most low- profile members of the royal family, and neither he nor his sister Zara undertake official royal duties.

However, the newlyweds raised eyebrows by agreeing to sell the story of their nuptials to the celebrity magazine Hello! for a sum reported at up to 500,000 (HK$7.6 million). ASSOCIATED PRESS, AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
