Toronto pumped for WorldPride 2014
TORONTO -- Residents and merchants of the city's gay village had a big reason to exude pride yesterday after Toronto beat Stockholm to host WorldPride 2014.
"This is good for the city and the economy," said Jimmy Georgoulis, owner of Fuzion Resto-Lounge and Garden. "People from allover the world will be coming here and spending their money."
Georgoulis said Toronto is a world-class city and there are many things for the thousands of attendees to do.
WorldPride organizers at an annual conference in St.Petersburg, Fla., yesterday announced Toronto won the competition to host the 2014 event.
"We are delighted to have been awarded this opportunity to bring the world to Toronto," said Mark Singh, chair of the WorldPride committee. "The advent of a festival like this is an opportunity to highlight the acceptance of the queer community by Canadians."
Singh said the event also raises awareness "of other countries where queers are still discriminated against."
WorldPride 2014 works to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues through parades, festivals and cultural activities. The event will feature a parade of nations, human rights conference and a wall in honour of the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots by gays in New York City.
Leading up to the vote, a delegation made up of officials of Tourism Toronto, Toronto police, TD Bank and the city made a pitch to WorldPride officials, who were shown a video for the occasion.
There will be a gathering of all Pride Toronto's former International Grand Marshals, an AIDS candlelight vigil and three parades: a Trans March, a Dyke March and Pride Parade.
"All the usual aspects of Toronto's Pride Week will remain,"said Singh. "World class entertainment and performers will appear on multiple stages during the festival."
Pride Toronto's 2009 parade drew more than one million people and brought an estimated economic benefit of $100 million to the city, organizers said.
WorldPride would occur during the regular Pride Week in 2014but would be bigger and more expensive, costing an estimated $10million rather than the $4 million spent this year.
